Sexual Orientation and Discrimination in Goods & Services
Goods, facilities and services covered by legislation on discrimination
on the grounds of sexual orientation
The legislation requires goods, facilities and services that are offered to
the public, whether for payment or not, to be provided on the same basis for
everyone, whatever their sexual orientation. Examples of such services are:-
- access to and use of public places
- accommodation in hotels, boarding houses, and bed and breakfasts
- banking facilities
- education
- insurance provision (with some exceptions)
- grants, loans, credit or finance agreements, including mortgages, pensions
and financial advice, with some exceptions based on advice from actuaries
- entertainment, refreshment or recreational facilities. There are special
rules for certain clubs for people of a particular sexual orientation
- transport and travel facilities
- the services of a profession or trade
- private health care, residential and nursing care and hospices.
